Granit Xhaka to Arsenal: Swiss midfielder says he wants his future confirmed before Euro 2016 begins
As Standard Sport reported on Wednesday Arsenal are similarly keen to secure the 23-year-old midfielder as soon as possible and have offered a fee close to the £35m figure at which Monchengladbach value their club captain, who they could obtain for £19.7m were they to wait until 2017.
Arsenal are understood to be increasingly confident that they will be able to complete the deal in the coming weeks. This is a situation that would suit Xhaka, who is set to be a key member of Vladimir Petkovic’s Swiss side at Euro 2016.
“It would be good if I knew where my future lies in the new season before the Euros,” he told reporters.
“It's not all that helpful if you have to think about stuff like that during the tournament. Thus, I would be pleased if it were to be decided before that.”
Xhaka’s European Championships will begin on June 11, when Switzerland take on Albania in Lens.
With Xhaka likely to arrive during the summer transfer window the Arsenal midfield available to Arsene Wenger in August should take on a very different shape to that which started this season.
Wenger secured Mohamed Elneny on a £7m deal from Basel in January and is set to release Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky when their contracts expire.
